This is at the city of Post Falls in northern Idaho, it is a few miles down stream from the head of the Spokane river, which comes out of Coeur d' Alene lake, and is about 30 miles from my house in Spokane.

I shot these three pictures of this chain along on the bank of the Spokane river where there use to be a lumber mill. In the top right corner you can see goose foot prints so you can get a perspective of the size of the chain for the last two shots. I love close up or macro photography I don't know why I don't do more of it.

Well Ranger Scout and I went to seven mile today for the first official hike of the season and a great time was had by all. We hiked back to deep creek canyon it is about 1.5 miles from the parking lot. there was a lot of water and Scout took advantage of it but he did not realize the water got deeper the closer you get to the middle so he went running in and got over his head and as you can see from the other pictures he got wet and dirty, but he had a lot of fun and that is what counts.

You can see from his back legs he got really dirty but we had 1.5 miles to go to get dry and a little bit cleaner.

Well Scout already likes to ride in the car, last weekend we took him and Ranger with us on a trip to Leavenworth which is about a 3 to 4 hour trip each way, and Scout just stayed in his bed with no complaints, of course we took several breaks along the way.

This was at our room in Leavenworth, Scout is just waiting to see what his mom is going to do.

On December 28 2008 three days after Christmas my wife and I had to have our beloved little friend Tasha put to sleep. We got her 12 years ago when she was 11 weeks old. We loved her very much, my wife was Tasha person she followed my wife everywhere. She was a very happy girl she loved to play ball and be with her family. We miss her very much it feels like a part of us is gone.

I thought this was an good post for Thanksgiving, we have two groups of turkeys near our house that have at least thirty birds each, sometimes they walk up our driveway, these photos were taken in our driveway. Ranger has a fit when he sees them he runs through the house as fast as he can barking as loud as he can, and then when I let him out after the turkeys are gone, he runs as fast as he can up the hill in back of our house to see if he can find the turkeys.

This Saturday was a very sad day for for us as we had to have our little friend Murray put down. He came to live with us when he was six months old, he came from an abusive home and it took a long time to gain his trust, but with a lot of love and patience his trust was gained and he became a very important part of our family. Mur had the sweetest spirit of any dog I have ever had, and was quite a little character. He loved to steal things from the other dogs, and in his younger days we called him the flying Mur as he would get a running start and leap for the bed or sofa from four or five feet away without a thought of where he was going to land. Mur was almost 15 years old and lived a long happy life with us We loved our little Mur very much and he will be greatly missed, it just isn't the same here without him.

Ranger and I went out to Riverside State Park today and did some roaming. It got up to 78 degrees today wow. I thought this tree was interesting, I guess it couldn't decided what way to grow.

Well this is the last of my shots from Rangers and my trip to Port Townsend which was in January. These shots are on the ferry going back to Seattle as were the previous shots.

These large cranes are on the Seattle side just before you get to the ferry dock.

This is what the drive was like on Interstate 90 after I got on the east side of the Cascade mountains so it was only about 200 miles of of winter roads. I suppose I shouldn't be taking pictures at 70 MPH on snowy roads but as you can see there was not much traffic to deal with.

This is more of Seattle, the tall structure you see is the Space needle it was built for the 1962 Worlds fair which my Mom and I got to attend. My Dad was in Seattle for a week when the Space needle was being built.

Ranger and I went over to Port Townsend on the week of January 21st to help my mother-in law get some things done to her house. I got the basement insulated and some sheet rock put up and we got a lot of stuff straitened up and hauled to the dump. So here are some pictures of my trip.

This is a picture of MT.Rainer taken on the trip over, we were out in the middle of Washington state someplace not sure where we were at the time, Ranger doesn't know either as he was asleep in the back. I have done this drive so many times I don't pay to much attention to where I am until I get to where I am going.

The next pictures are taken from the ferry at Seattle.

I tried to get the seagulls flying around, people feed them French fries so they know there is always food at the pier.These two shots are of Seattle as we were leaving the dock, it is about a 25 min. ride to the other side.

Global warming?

These are a few shots I took around our house today, looks like we are having a normal winter, the first one we have had in quite some time. I am ready for it to end soon , I am tired of plowing the driveway, but it is very beautiful. I think we have had about sixty inches total for the year and more on the way.

The city of Spokane forgot how to take care of the streets, I don't think who ever is running the street department has ever been through a winter like this, maybe never been through a winter period, probably from a warmer climate.The streets are worse than I have ever seen them and I have been driving on them about forty years, ( I know that is a long time and yes there were cars that long ago ha ha.)there have been many winters with lots of snow so I don't know what the problem is .

In December my father-in law and I took a little drive on a Saturday morning out to Little Falls dam, it is about forty miles from home, and it is about ten miles past Long Lake dam, both are on the Spokane river. You can see Long Lake dam on my 09/19/2007 blog labeled dam shots. I will be posting more shots of this dam this week. On our drive I saw this shadow on the car and had to stop and take a picture, you have to take this type of shot when you see it as the sun doesn't wait for you, a few minutes later and it wouldn't have been there.

Selkirks

It was a beautiful sunny day Friday so Ranger and I went out roaming to see if we could find some photos and we found these of Mount Spokane. It is part of the Selkirk mountian range. There is some information at the end of this post about the Selkirk range. The ski area on MT. Spokane is about a thirty minute drive from my house depending on the weather. In the summer you can drive to the top which takes about 45 minutes or so, and I think you can see seven lakes from the top, you can also see into Idaho and Montana it is quite spectacular.

Location: The Selkirks are nestled between the Purcell Mountains on the east and the Monashee Mountains on the west. The eastern boundary is the Kootenai River (in the US), Kootenay Lake, Duncan River, Beaver River, and Columbia Reach on McNaughton Lake. The western boundary is formed by Arrow Lake and the north flowing Columbia River, as well as a section of the Spokane River and, on the far SE, Lake Pend Oreille. The chain encompasses the Rogers Pass Area.

Terrain: The geology of the Selkirks is quite different from the Rockies and from the Purcells and other ranges to the West. Some of the rocks are the oldest outside the Pre-Cambrian shield dating about 600 million years. Before the Rockies were thrust up by continental drift, the Selkirks stood alone as an island of mountains bordering the Pacific Coast with an inland sea separating them from the Shield. The largest peak is Sir Sandford rising to a height of 11580 feet, north of Rogers Pass.

Selkirk Mountains History

The Selkirks were first identified as a separate range of mountains from the Rockies by David Thompson, of the Northwest Company of fur traders in 1807. At this time they were named "Nelsons Mountains". When the Northwest Company was merged with the Hudson's Bay Company, the mountains were given their present name of the "Selkirks", after Thomas Douglas of the Hudson's Bay Company, and the fifth Earl of Selkirk.

It was the Selkirks, and not the Rockies that formed the most formidible barrier to the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the confederation of Canada. In David Thompson's day, the only way to get through the Selkirks was to follow the river valleys such as the Columbia which skirted around the edge. The thing that made the Railway possible was the discovery of Rogers Pass. Initially the railway ran over the top of both Rogers Pass in the Selkirks, and the Kicking Horse Pass in the Rockies but within the first 40 years were made less severe with tunnels: the Connaught tunnel under Rogers Pass and the Spiral Tunnels to reduce the 7% grade on the "big hill" up from Field to the Kicking Horse Pass.

Rogers Pass was initially the hub of mountaineering in Canada, with the CPR providing guides and hotels from the pass. The railway through Rogers Pass continued to be plagued by snowslides, and was eventually abandoned in favor of the Connaught Tunnel under the pass. From then until the Trans Canada highway was completed in the early 1960's, Rogers Pass was deserted, as the road went north around the "big bend" at Mica Creek. Due to tremendous snowfalls, full time avalanche crews now bombard the slopes regularly above the pass in winter to bring down the snow. It is not uncommon for the trans-Canada highway to be closed for 12 or 24 hour periods.

Port Townsend

In October when we went to Wenatchee we also went to Port Townsend where my mother-in law lives, we only had time to stay one day but it was a lot of fun. Ranger and I roamed around town and took some photos. Fort Worden State Park which is in Port Townsend is where they filmed a lot of the movie An Officer and A Gentlemen. Fort Warden is also a very interesting place.

I thought this was a funny sign, I guess it is there in case you can't stay on the sidewalk?

I thought this little church was interesting with its red door . There were also some great shadows and if you look close there is a lot of interesting detail in the building.

MT Spokane

Ranger and I went roaming on Mount Spokane the other day, the last time we were here there wasn't any snow. You can see this spot in my November 4th post it looks quite different.

The reason I don't have more shots of Ranger is this is usauly how they turn out, because it is very seldom he stops long enough to get a shot.

You can see Ranger is having a good time he is smiling.

Something got his attention I don't know what he found but it stopped him for at least ten or fifteen seconds.

Motorcycle

Over the past few months I have made a few comments about our motorcycle so I thought I should post some shots of it. Please excuse the messy garage, cleaning it is one of many projects on the never ending list of things to do. To me one of our most memorable trips was when we went to Jackson Hole Wyoming with another couple, about a 2,000 mile round trip, about, six days. On that trip we went through Yellowstone National Park. If you have ever been to Yellowstone you know that the animals roam free, which when you are in a car is interesting enough, but when you are on a motorcycle, stuck in a traffic jam, and you have Buffalo walking along side the road about three feet from you and they turn that massive head and look at you, you can't help wondering what they are thinking. We are hoping to go on a nice long trip this coming year, maybe down through the Redwoods, if time permitted we would love to go to Brice and Zion, but we will have to see what the next year brings. This is Ranger and the rest of the pack, I took these photos yesterday while they were waiting for breakfast, Murray is on the left he is 14 years old so his job now is sleeping most of the time, Tasha is on the right, she is about 11 years old, and still loves to play ball, and can give Ranger a pretty good workout, and of course you all know Ranger he will be 3 years old soon. We got Ranger when he was about 9 months old, Tasha we have had since she was 9 weeks, and Murray we rescued when he was about 6 months.

I left Ranger's eyes like this because it looks kind of wild which also matches his personality .

Last of truck ramp

This is the last series of shots for the truck ramp, everyone is probably glad to here that, nothing like beating a subject to death. I said in one of my earlier post on the old Blewett highway that I like old highways, so I had to put this shot in of the old road. You can see the current highway in the top left of the picture, this is about halfway down the hill.

Here we are at the bottom of the hill as you can see we are now at 785 feet in elevation, so in 6 miles we have dropped 2027 feet. You can see the bottom end of the truck ramp on the left side of the road where the small sign is, and the valley the road goes through.

The next two shots are of the actual truck ramp, and I confess I took these shots while I was driving down the road , but I thought it was pretty safe as there were no other cars on the road, and if I got in trouble the truck ramp was there to stop me, ha ha.

I guess this sign is so people don't stop or park on the ramp.

We are back to the road leading to the runaway truck ramp. This is the road just past the
35 MPH curves that are in my first post of this area.

the remainder of the shots are about half way down the hill so you have gone about three miles at this point.

At this point you have dropped 1167 feet in elvation from where you started at the top.

I saw about 10 of these trucks in the hour I was on the hill this is near the curves in the second photo. I would estimate this truck was going between 40 and 50 MPH when he went past me.

As you can see from this shot there is not much room for error.

Veterans Day

Since today is Veterans day I thought this would be a good time to honor my Dad who I miss very much. Dad served in the army during WW II in the Philippines. He was overseas for about three years. I miss my Dad more than words could ever express, he was the BEST. This is for you Dad I love you and I know someday we will be together with the Lord.

One of the first times that I visited North Bay photos there was a photo of a runaway truck ramp. On our recent trip to Wenatchee we went down this hill which is on highway 2, and I though that North Bay might enjoy seeing this truck ramp, and I hope that everyone else does also. My next two or three posts will be a series of shots of the road leading to the ramp as I can only post five shots at a time.

Saturday hike

Saturday we went for a hike on Mount Spokane and had a very good time, the temperature was nice and there was very little wind. Ranger thought the best part was not having to be on his leash.

As you can see even when he wasn't hooked to the leash it was still a great play toy

Aw there is nothing like a drink from a cold mountain stream after an invigorating hike and a game of pulling on the leash, and fetching anything I would throw for him.

We are back sorry for the absents just got busy and lost track of time. Last week we went on a trip to Wenatchee, and Port Townsend. I didn't take as many pictures as I had planned but I did take some about 140 or so.

I love old highways some how they fascinate me, they use to find ways to go around and over things, it seems like now when it comes to building roads you don't have to try to figure out how to go around or over anything you just go through it. Anyway here are some pictures of the old Blewett pass this use to be the main highway from highway 2 near Leavenworth to Ellensburg, you can still go over the old pass but Ranger and I didn't go very far up the pass because as you can see it is very narrow and the drop off the side in the first picture is about 600 feet to the bottom , and this is only about 2 miles up the road, and the road is 10 miles long, and nobody knew that we were up there. I hope to go back there next year and travel the entire road before you can't travel it anymore.

This was an area at the start of the old pass, Ranger got to be out without his leash and he really enjoyed that. As you can see it was a bit on the cool side and this was about 10:30 in the morning.

Ranger and I went on our first outing since his surgery, so we went out to seven mile which is on the Spokane river, and is real easy hiking.

Ranger and I had a wonderful time and he was so excited, here he is watching a squirrel that saw us and ran up the tree what fun.

Ranger loves to play with pine cones, one of his favorite games is fetching the pine cone.

We just wanted to let everyone know that Ranger went in to the vet Friday, and got a clean bill of health, he is very happy about this, as you can see he is smiling. This is part of highway 20 the North Cascade highway, which is of course in the Cascade mountain range, it is a beautiful motorcycle trip or car trip, this was toward the end of July, there is a portion of the road that is closed in the winter, as you can imagine how much snow there must be. This is Mount Baker which also is in the Cascade range here is some info on it. Mt. Baker Elevation: 10,800 ft (3285 m) has been very active over the last 10,000 years. Over that time it has had one pyroclastic flow, at least four small tephra eruptions, at least two lava flows and at least eight mud flows. Mud flows remain the largest hazard on Mt. Baker. Mt. Baker erupted in 1843. This eruption resulted in the deaths of many fish in the Baker River, a large forest fire, and the dropping of volcanic ash. The release of steam occurred at Mt. Baker in 1975-6, but no eruption followed this event. One of the most recent formations on Baker is a ~2500 ft (~760 m) wide, ~330ft (~100 m) high cinder cone and its ~7 mile (~11 km) long lava flow at Schreibers Meadow.Mt. Baker has erupted 13 times in recorded history. Its last eruption was in 1880.

This is Protection Island we took a tour boat out around the island, at first glance this looks like rocks but look closer these are sea loins. We also got to see the tufted puffins. Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge Protection Island Refuge is located near the mouth of Discovery Bay in the Strait of Juan de Fuca in Jefferson County, Washington. Approximately 70 percent of the nesting seabird population of Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca nest on the island, which includes one of the largest nesting colonies of rhinoceros auklets in the world and the largest nesting colony of glaucous-winged gulls in Washington. The island contains one of the last 2 nesting colonies of tufted puffins in the Puget Sound area. About 1,000 harbor seals depend upon the island for a pupping and rest area.

These shots are at Port Angeles Washington, it is on the Olympic Peninsula, and a very beautiful place. Ranger gets his stitches out Friday so things should get back to normal for us .

busy week

I am sorry for not posting to my blog or commenting on anyones blog. Monday after I got home from work I discovered that Ranger had an abscess on his back leg ,so off to the vet we went at 8:30 pm. I got home about 9:45 Ranger was operated on that night and had to stay overnight. I picked him up after work on Tuesday. Ranger managed to pull the drain tubes out that night by 8:00 and so back to the vet. They got the drain tubes put back in and we made it home about 10:30 that night, and now he has one of those cone shaped collars on until Saturday. He is not happy about that but it is for his own good. My wife and I took a motorcycle trip last July, here are a few pictures from that.

Long Lake Dam and Overlook
This Avista Corp. facility was recorded as the tallest dam in the world when it was built in 1915, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The nearby overlook offers a scenic view of the dam's spillway, with the Little Falls Reservoir in the foreground Long Lake and Devil's Gap in the background. The Spokane River flows from Lake Coeur d'Alene in northern Idaho 90 miles northwest through the city of Spokane, Washington, before emptying into the Colombia river at the site of fort Spokane. Long Lake is a 25 mile long reservoir, running between Nine Mile Falls Dam ( which you can see in my earlier blog posts) and Long Lake Dam to the west.

We went out to Long lake dam on Saturday which is about 30 miles away, and took some pictures, and relaxed, this is a shot of the Spokane river downstream from below the dam.My next few posts will be of this area I hope you enjoy.

I know these look like apples but they are berries that are about as big around as an ink pen.

Lower Nine Mile

Ranger and I were out at Nine mile again this time we were down below the dam, if you look in my archives you can see some pictures from above the dam. This is only about 10 miles from my house so it is easy to get to, and there are a lot of things to see and explore in this area . Here are a pair of osprey they nest by the river and feed on fish, and are here from spring till fall they raise there young through the summer.

Ranger and I went up to MT. Spokane Sunday and went for a little hike, it was hazy but still beautiful. I am not sure what lake this is.

This tower was near where we started our hike which is where the first ski lodge was at on the mountain.

This is the Columbia River as it flows out of Canada into the US. A few miles down stream it turns into Lake Roosevelt which is about 130 miles long, it is the water backed up by Coulee dam.

Ranger and I invited my father-in-law,and nephew, to go on a picture taking journey with us,so we went north Colville, about 70 miles from home and had breakfast at Arby's , and then north from there to the Canadian border. We went via Deep Lake and Leadpoint , you can still find Leadpoint on some maps. Then we traveled back along the Columbia river to Kettle Falls and then home. About a 250 mile round trip. Ranger and I had a great time, thanks Don and Luke for going with us.
